This is "Beta Bridge," a
University of Virginia landmark and communications device. It is traditionally
where the Fraternities and Sororities paint humorous and "other"
messages. This view is from the railroad tracks underneath rather
than the more common view from the road passing over above. Before
the bridge was cleaned yearly, an Architecture School professor took
a core sample of the paint to determine how many layers existed.
This was one of the hardest night shots to
develop and shoot, because of the numerous arc lights that couldn't
be eliminated from the image. 4X5 Speed Graphic, Tri-X, 90mm lens,
7 minute exposure at F-22. Click for a larger image.
